Five games out with 15 to play might be asking too much of Joe Maddon and the Tampa Bay Rays who continued their slide on Monday with a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

There's never a good time to go into a slump, but the Rays have certainly found a very bad time on the schedule to experience one. Monday's setback was their sixth in the last seven games, and left Maddon's squad a woeful 8-14 since reaching a high-water mark of 15-games above .500 with a 70-55 record on Aug. 23.

This will be his fifth go against Boston this season, the first four times split 2-2 on the Rays' ledger, 1-1 at Tropicana Field. Three of the four outings met the definition of quality starts, though that hasn't necessarily been a good thing for Hellickson and the team of late. The good news is Boston also hasn't had much success with Doubront on the mound. The Red Sox grabbed the dubya just twice in his last eight starts, and the southpaw last picked up a win on his scorecard two months ago on July 18.
Going against Maddon and the Rays in the past has cost me, but there's nothing to suggest getting behind them on a line like this is a sensible move. I will be adding the dog to my MLB picks tonight.
