The Twins and the Indians are battling for last place in the American League Central, and both will have minor league call-ups in the lineup for this series as they evaluate talent for next season. Go ‘under’ in Cleveland on Tuesday.
Do not expect too much scoring Tuesday night when P.J. Walters and the Minnesota Twins (60-87 overall, 31-41 away) take on David Huff and the Cleveland Indians (61-86 overall, 33-39 home) in the first game of a three-game series from Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH at 7:05 ET.
The posted total at Bodog is 9½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -115.
This series is a battle for last place in the American League Central Division, with the Twins currently occupying the basement one game behind the Indians, but it also will give each team a chance to sprinkle in some minor league players in their lineups in order to evaluate talent. The reason this is the perfect series to do that is because both clubs have games coming up vs. playoff contenders, at which time they play their best players in the interest of fair play.
The Twins dropped back to last place by getting swept three games by the Chicago White Sox this weekend after they had escaped the basement by taking three out of four games from these Indians in Minnesota last week. The Twins had been hitting the ball well for a while, but their bats were quieted by the White Sox as they scored a total of five runs on the three losses.
Furthermore, those losses came at home and Minnesota has not hit as well on the road, where it is batting .241 overall for the whole season including just .224 vs. left-handed pitchers, which should help Cleveland’s southpaw starter Huff.
Minnesota’s starter Walters is just 2-4 with a 6.70 ERA, but he was bothered by shoulder inflammation earlier in the season and that landed him on the Disabled List for three months.Walters has made two starts since coming off of the DL and he improved in his last outing, although you would not now it by the line score.
Walters allowed only one run over the first four innings vs. the Kansas City Royals before failing to get an out in the fifth inning and being charged with five runs including one baserunner he surrendered scoring after he left the game. Still, Walters should now be stronger and progress from that start, and he is not exactly facing a powerful Cleveland lineup here.
The Indians are a distressing 7-24 in their last 31 games and they are in a collective batting slump, batting just 228 as a team over the last 10 games while averaging 3.70 runs per game in that span. And most of that came with their regular lineup on the field, which does not figure to be the case the next three games
Huff will be making his first start of this season, but the southpaw is not lacking in Major League experience as he has made 48 starts in his career, including 10 for the Indians last year when he finished just 2-6 with a 4.09 ERA. However, perhaps the extra minor league seasoning he gained this year has done him some good as he has pitched well in two relief appearances since being recalled, including retiring all 10 batters he faced vs. these Twins in his first appearance. .
.
We now look for Huff to build on that outing and to take advantage of this opportunity to show that he belongs in the Cleveland rotation next season. With all of this in mind, go ‘under’ in Progressive Field on Tuesday. .
