Tim Hudson is 13-5 for the Braves while Jhoulys Chacin has allowed one run in each of his last three starts. With these teams going ‘under’ in all three games of this series so far including a 1-0 game last night, go ‘under’ again Thursday.
Do expect many offensive fireworks on Thursday when Jhoulys Chacin and the Colorado Rockies (56-79 overall, 26-38 away) take on Tim Hudson and the Atlanta Braves (77-60 overall, 39-32 home) in the final game of a four-game series from Turner Field in Atlanta, GA at 12:10 ET.
The posted total at Bodog is 7½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -120.
The Braves probably will not catch the Washington Nationals in the National League East as they trail by 7½ games, but Atlanta looks to be in good shape for a playoff spot as it tops the wild card standings by three games over the St. Louis Cardinals and by 4½ games over the Pittsburgh Pirates with MLB expanding to two wild cards this season.
The Braves are not hitting well right now though, averaging 3.2 runs over the last four games with the ‘under’ going 4-1 in that span, and that includes the ‘under’ going a perfect 3-0 in this series so far. The Atlanta bats have particularly gone AWOL the last two nights while producing a grand total of one run, but after getting shut out on Tuesday, the Braves were very fortunate to come away with a 1-0 win last night despite managing just four hits!
Furthermore, the ‘under’ is now 21-6 in the last 27 Atlanta home games and 21-6-1 in the last 29 Colorado road games, and Thursday’s pitching matchup seems conducive to those trends continuing for at least one more game.
Hudson spent some time on the Disabled List earlier this season, but he seems just fine as he is 13-5 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Yes he is coming off of a disappointing start vs. the Philadelphia Phillies last Saturday, but he had been probably the steadiest Atlanta starter over his previous 10 outings and Hudson has still allowed two runs or less in four of his last seven starts.
Granted he did not pitch well vs. Colorado in Denver back in May, but he has dominated the Rockies the last three times he has faced them here at home, allowing a grand total of three runs on 11 hits in 23.1 innings including a Complete Game shutout. He is facing a Colorado lineup that is batting a measly .233 vs. right-handed pitchers on the road this season while averaging only 3.42 runs per game against them.
The Rockies have scored a ton of runs at home as usual, but their offense has totally disappeared when they hit the road, which makes their 37-26 ‘under’ mark on the road this season and their recent lucrative ‘under’ run away from home understandable. Having a sharp pitcher in Chacin on the mound today also helps the cause.
Chacin has made three starts since returning to the Colorado rotation on August 21st after three months on the DL, and he has allowed exactly one run in all three of those outings, yielding a total of three runs on 14 hits plus four walks in 18 innings. He even went seven innings while throwing an economic 74 pitches last time out, marking the longest stint for a Rockies starter since June 19th when they implemented a 75-pitch limit while going to a four-man rotation.
Therefore, look for these teams to make it a perfect 4-0 for the ‘under’ in this four-game series on Thursday.
