Kris Medlen has pitched well in his two starts since the Braves put him in the rotation, and Johan Santana is reportedly healthy for his first start off of the Disabled List for the Mets. Go ‘under’ at Citi Field in New York on Saturday.
Do not look for too much scoring Saturday night when Kris Medlen and the Atlanta Braves (65-47 overall, 33-21 away) take on Johan Santana and the New York Mets (54-59 overall, 27-29 home) as the teams play the second game of a three-game weekend series from Citi Field in Flushing, NY at 7:10 ET.
The posted total at Pinnacle Sports is 7½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.
The Braves are currently 4½ games behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East, but Atlanta does lead the wild card race by two games over the Pittsburgh Pirates with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals all 4½ games behind. Remember that for the first time this season, the top two wild card teams will play a one-game playoff.
The Braves have had a successful 3-1 road trip so far, winning the series opener 4-0 here last night on a Complete Game three-hit shutout by Paul Maholm after Atlanta won two out of three games vs. the Phillies in Philadelphia. Thus the Braves have remained as hot as the Atlanta weather, going 23-8 in their last 31 games overall.
This hot streak has been keyed by fine pitching, as the Braves have moved up to sixth in the National League in team ERA by allowing three runs or less in 15 of their last 17 games, with the ‘under’ going 13-4 in those contests.
Young Medlen has pitched well in both of his starts since entering the rotation, limiting the Houston Astros to one run and five hits in 5.1 innings last time out after allowing one run on only four hits vs. the Miami Marlins in his previous start. Remember that the Braves have always been high on Medlen, but they may have called him up prematurely two years ago, and he is more mature now at the age of 26.
Granted, the two offenses he has faced aren’t much and he still seems to lack stamina, but Medlen is now facing a struggling Mets’ lineup that is batting just .216 over the last five games and he has the support of an Atlanta bullpen that has posted a microscopic 0.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 30 innings over the last 10 games.
Now it is no secret that Santana has struggled since tossing the first no-hitter in Mets history, but it was finally revealed that he was pitching with a sprained right ankle, meaning he was throwing strictly with his arm while favoring the ankle on his stride. He was placed on the Disabled List on July 21st and is coming off today to take this start, reportedly fully healed.
Thus, expect to see a pitcher closer to the one at the beginning of the season that did not appear to miss a beat following arm surgery that the one that got bombed recently. With this in mind, go ‘under’ in Flushing on Saturday.
