MLB Pick: Mariners, Rays to go ‘under’

The Mariners and Rays have now gone ‘under’ in three straight meetings after a 2-1 Seattle win last night, and with these teams ranking second to last and third to last in the Major Leagues in batting, go ‘under’ again on Sunday.

Look for both teams to struggle to score runs on Sunday afternoon when Blake Beavan and the Seattle Mariners (41-55 overall, 24-28 away) take on Matt Moore and the Tampa Bay Rays (49-46 overall, 28-24 home) as the teams conclude a three-game weekend series from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL at 1:40 ET.

The posted total at 5 Dimes is 8 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -112.

IchiroThis series pits the teams with the second and lowest team batting averages in all of baseball against each other, as Seattle ranks 29th out of 30 teams with a .232 batting average with Tampa Bay only marginally ahead at .233 in 28th, with only the Oakland Athletics (.228) hitting worse than these clubs. Understandably, the ‘under’ is 5-1 in the six meetings between these clubs this season including 3-0 in the last three, with Seattle winning the latest matchup 2-1 on Saturday.

The Rays were picked by some to compete for the American League pennant before the season, and the Rays’ pitching has been good enough as they rank second in the American League with a 3.69 team ERA. However, they have been unable to get many clutch hits all year long, and that weakness has been even more pronounced lately as that are bating a dismal .180 with runners in scoring position in their nine games since the All-Star break.

Tampa Bay still led the American League East for a while earlier in the year on the strength of its pitching alone, but the lack of hitting has led to inconsistency and the Rays now find themselves in third place and 8½ games behind the first place New York Yankees. The combination of weak hitting and good pitching has made the Rays a great ‘under’ team though, with the ‘under’ going 52-38-5 in all Rays games and 5-1 in the last six contests.

Granted, just about the only disappointment on the starting staff this year has been Sunday’s starter Moore, who the Rays regarded so highly that they started him in Game 1 of the playoffs last season after just 9.1 Major League innings, and he promptly allowed only two hits in seven scoreless innings vs. the Texas Rangers.

Moore is a disappointing 6-6 with a 4.39 ERA and 1.46 WHIP this season, but after a terrible start. Moor has actually allowed three earned runs or less in nine of his last 12 starts. He also pitched well in his only start vs. the Mariners right here in St. Petersburg, allowing just one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts against one walk in five innings of a 3-1 win.

The Mariners actually scored 31 runs over a four-game series vs. the Royals in Kansas Citybefore coming to Florida, but their bats were quickly quieted by the fine Tampa Bay pitching, managing only five hits in 14 innings in Friday’s 4-3 loss and then being held scoreless over the last eight innings after scoring two runs in the first last night.

The biggest threat to this ‘under’ is Beavan, he is making his second start after a stint in the minors and who has now allowed at least five earned runs in his last four starts at the Major League level. However, even he can have some success today vs. a Tampa Bay offense that is batting only .229 vs. right-handers at home this year.

Thus look for both lineups to continue to struggle and for the teams to go ‘under’ for the sixth time in seven meetings this year on Sunday.
Mariners, Rays ‘under’ 8 (-112) +++
