MLB Pick: Indians, Twins stay ‘under’

Justin Masterson of the Indians has allowed one earned run or less in six of his last nine starts and he has allowed three earned runs or less in nine of 10 starts vs. the Twins. With Samuel Deduno showing promise, go ‘under’ Saturday.

Look for a low scoring game in the Twin Cities Saturday night when Justin Masterson and the Cleveland Indians (50-50 overall, 23-25 away) take on Samuel Deduno and the Minnesota Twins (41-58 overall, 20-30 home) as the teams play the middle game of a three-game weekend series from Target Field in Minneapolis, MN at 7:10 ET.

The posted total at Pinnacle Sports is 9 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -110.

Justin MastersonThe Indians got skunked in a big way in the series opener on Friday 11-0, leaving then 4½ games behind the first place Chicago White Sox and three games behind the Detroit Tigers while in third place in the American League Central.

What made that loss to the last place Twins especially disappointing was that thee Tribe had just taken two out of three games from the Tigers, including beating reining Cy Young winner and MVP Justin Verlander on Thursday. Cleveland now looks to get back on track with Masterson on the bump.

Masterson has not been nearly as consistent as he was in his break-through season of a year ago, when he won a career high 12 games while pitching for a team that did not give him much run support and posting a nice 3.21 ERA over 33 starts covering 216 innings. He is just 7-8 with a 4.12 ERA and 1.37 WHIP this season.

With that said, Masterson is in good current form allowing one earned run or less in six of his last nine starts, including last time out, when he limited the Baltimore Orioles to one run on seven hits in 7.1 innings with six strikeouts. Masterson has also had nice success vs. the Twins, allowing three earned runs or less in nine of his 10 career starts against them, including his only start vs. Minnesota this year.

Then again, Masterson has not been the only pitcher to take advantage of a Twins’ team that is 13 games behind the White Sox and 8½ games behind these Indians. Minnesota had just been swept in a three-game series by the White Sox prior to its big win last night.

Deduno has been quite serviceable in his three starts since getting called up, allowing three earned runs or less on each occasion, and his last start vs. the Kansas City Royals on Sunday was his best one yet as he surrendered only one run on six hits in 6.1 innings. He will be facing the Indians for the first time ever, and the Tribe has had enough trouble as of late vs. pitchers that it has seen, so Deduno should have an added edge.

Cleveland is batting only .239 over the last 10 games while averaging a scant 3.00 runs per game, and the Indians have scored three runs or less in eight of their last nine games, oddly enough exceeding that figure only vs. Verlander!

Thus, look for both offenses to be kept in check and for this game to stay in the single-digits as the clubs go ‘under’ in Minnesota on Saturday.
