The San Diego Padres are swinging the bat so well right now that the ‘over’ is 7-1 in their last eight games at pitcher friendly Petco Park. Go ‘over’ again when Casey Kelly takes on Drew Pomeranz and the Rockies on Saturday
Expect a higher scoring game than the total suggests Saturday night when Drew Pomeranz and the Colorado Rockies (58-85 overall, 27-42 away) take on Casey Kelly and the San Diego Padres (69-76 overall, 38-35 home) in the second game of a three-game weekend series from Petco Park in San Diego, CA at 8:35 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 7½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘over’ set at -102.
The Padres have exceeded expectations this year by being only seven games under .500 at this late stage of the season, and this team that was the consensus selection to finish in last place before the season is now only 1½ games behind the third place Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West.
An even bigger surprise is how the Padres have been winning, asSan Diego is one of the hottest hitting teams in baseball right nowand it boasts a player in Chase Headley that currently leads the National League with 102 RBI, and that is while batting in the most pitcher friendly stadium in the National League in Petco Park half the time!
Of course, they were the same old Padres for much of the year, and as a result, they are batting just .246 as a team over the season. That average has been rising steadily though while the Padres have uncharacteristically averaged 5.66 runs over the last 10 games, and they have been pummeling left-handed pitchers during this time, hitting .336 and averaging a hearty 7.24 runs per nine innings against them, which does not bode well for the Rockies’ lefty Pomeranz.
The ‘over’ is 7-2 in the last nine San Diego games overall and 7-1 in the last eight games played in this stadium, which is normally a pitcher’s haven. Expect more of the same tonight as after a promising Major League debut, the Padres’ starter Kelly has been lit up for 13 runs on 16 hits in just eight innings in his last two starts!
Also, the youngster loses the element of surprise here as one of his three starts came vs. these Rockies in Colorado, where he was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits plus two walks in 5.2 innings with two home runs allowed.
The Rockies have had a very disappointing year as they are in last place in the West with practically no hope of escaping the cellar, as they trail these fourth place Padres by 10 games with 19 games left to play. The Rockies are 2-7 in their last nine games overall, although the second win did come in a 7-4 triumph in the series opener here last night.
Pomeranz has not exactly set the house on fire this year as he is an ugly 1-8, although his 4.80 ERA and 1.45 WHIP are lower than you would expect. However, he was torched the last time he faced the Padres on July 20th for seven earned runs on nine hits while lasting only three innings right here in this ballpark, and as mentioned the San Diego offense is feasting off of southpaws as of late.
Thus, look for the recent string of San Diego ‘overs’ to continue with another Petco ‘over’ on Saturday.
