Red Sox vs. Rays: MLB Picks 19.09.2012

Don't ask Joe Maddon and the Tampa Bay Rays what they think about the 'weak roster' that Bobby Valentine and the Boston Red Sox are fielding. Two contests into this 4-game set, the Rays' prospects of gaining just a split with this pathetic Boston bunch seem remote, and it just might be time to bury Tampa Bay's playoff hopes.
Tampa Bay RaysMaddon's club will try once again to stop a slide that now has the Rays six games out of the second American League wild card slot. Their hopes will fall on the right shoulder of rookie Chris Archer who is making just his fourth major league start and has yet to register a win in the previous three.
Despite Archer's inexperience and 0-3 record, MLB odds makers have priced him and the Rays as decided -170 favorites, even a bit higher at some baseball betting locales. The primary reason for that is Daisuke Matsuzaka is slated to start for the Red Sox.
An 8 run total for the game is leaning UNDER with a -115 to -120 price at most of the MLB sportsbooks charted on SBR odds.
Tampa Bay couldn't take advantage of eight free passes issued byBoston hurlers on Tuesday night, and the Rays committed three errors for a second straight game in the 7-5 defeat. Two of those fielding gaffes were charged to Sean Rodriguez, his second consecutive 2-E game despite not starting in either of the first two contests.
Archer has pitched better than his W-L record would tell you, while it could be argued that Matsuzaka has pitched worse than his 1-5 mark. The flip side to that is the Rays have scored just two runs in each of Archer's three starts, and haven't exactly been tearing the cover off the ball with just 26 runs combined in their last eight games.
There really isn't anything about this game that gets me excited to make one play or another, but I'll go with the OVER despite that.
My pick: Over 8 (+100)  +++
