MLB Pick: Red Sox, Blue Jays go ‘under’

The Red Sox and the Blue Jays are two dead teams right now that just cannot wait for this season to be over and done with, and that has been reflected by the weak hitting in the last 10 games by each club so go ‘under’ on Friday.

Look for two listless offenses north or the border and a low scoring game on Friday night when Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Boston Red Sox (64-80 overall, 31-37 away) take on Aaron Laffey and the Toronto Blue Jays (65-77 overall, 35-36 home) in the opening game of a three-game series from Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON Canada at 7:07 ET.

The posted total at Pinnacle Sports is 9 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -114.

Aaron LaffeyThe pitching matchup may not look like much in this contest, with Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-5, 7.20 ERA, 1.57 WHIP) taking on Toronto’s Aaron Laffey (3-5, 4.43 ERA, 1.32 WHIP), but that is hardly the point as both clubs have thrown in the towel for this season and are just counting the days until it finally ends in less than three weeks.

The Red Sox are so lethargic right know that they could not even show any excitement while losing two our of three games to the New York Yankees this week when they had a chance to cripple their biggest rivals’ playoff chances while playing at home on Fenway Park, so it is very hard to imagine Boston getting very excited for another also-ran on the road.

The hiring of the arrogant Bonny Valentine as manager looked like a disaster from the very beginning with most of the Boston players hating to play for him, and his days in Beantown may be numbered right now. The players certainly appear to be putting a rush on the dismissal process with their play on the field.

The Red Sox are 2-13 in their last 15 games, as they went 1-8 on their last road trip, only to return home for a 1-5 home stand that began with a three-game sweep at the hands of these Blue Jays last weekend. Boston is not hitting a lick right now, batting only .227 over the last 10 games including hitting .221 vs. left-handed pitchers like Laffey and averaging a laughable 1.90 runs per nine innings against them over this current span.

The Red Sox went ‘under’ in all three games vs. the Yankees and the ‘under’ is 6-2-1 in their last nine games overall.

The Blue Jays are just as dead attitude wise as Boston is right now, although at least the Blue Jays have the excuse of fielding a AAA lineup with so many starters on the Disabled List. Toronto is batting .221 over the last 10 games and while the Jays are 5-6 in their last 11 contests, that record would be 2-6 if not for the three wins vs. a Boston team that is in sorrier shape than they are.

Finally, all Toronto home games are averaging 9.41 total runs per game this season, which is lower than you would expect considering that Toronto actually ranks fourth in the Major Leagues with 183 home runs. The Jays were an all-or-nothing team when they were healthy though, as they scored a high majority of their runs on home runs and were never very good at generating runs.

All of that power is on the sidelines now, especially Jose Batista, and the Blue Jays have nothing to fall back on, which is yet another reason to go ‘under’ in Canada on Friday.
