MLB Pick: Rangers, Mariners go ‘under’ 23.09.2012

The Mariners beat the Rangers 1-0 last night, and with Seattle’s Jason Vargas facing a Texas lineup without Josh Hamilton and with Ryan Dempster of the Rangers expected to rebound off a bad outing, go ‘under’ again on Sunday.

Do not look for too much scoring on Sunday when Ryan Dempster and the Texas Rangers (89-62 overall, 42-35 away) take on Jason Vargas and the Seattle Mariners (72-80 overall, 38-39 home) in the final game of a three-game series from Safeco Field in Seattle, WA at 4:10 ET.

The posted total at 5 Dimes is 7 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.

Jason VargasThe Rangers lead the American League West, but they are rather fortunate to be holding on to a four-game lead over the Oakland Athletics as both teams have hit a bit of a lull as of late. Texas is a erratic 4-5 over the last nine games and it is still without the services of Josh Hamilton, who is not even with the team right now as he is back in Texas undergoing tests for a sinus infection that have effected his vision.

The Rangers missed a golden opportunity to extend their division lead by losing the first two games of this series vs. the last place Mariners, including getting shut out 1-0 by Blake Beavan and two Seattle relievers last night, wasting a Complete Game performance by Matt Harrison. That marked the fifth time in the last six games that Texas scored three runs or less.

Thus, the Rangers may need a good performance from Dempster today in order to avoid the sweep, and he was not good last time out when he surrendered five earned runs on six hits and three walks while lasting only 3.1 innings in an 11-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

However, Dempster had allowed two runs or less in his previous five starts and he is still 6-2 in a Texas uniform since coming over from the Chicago Cubs literally minutes before the trading deadline with the Rangers as a team going 7-2 in his starts. He figures to bounce back well today in a pitcher’s park vs. a Seattle lineup that is batting a poor .204 vs. right-handed pitchers at home over the entire season.

All things considered, the Mariners have exceeded expectations by being only eight games under .500, and their wins the last two nights leave them with a chance to hit the .500 mark at home this year with a victory today.

They attempt to do so with their number two starter Vargas on the bump. Vargas is 14-10 with a 3.92 ERA and a very good 1.18 WHIP, and unlike Dempster, he stayed put at the trading deadline despite being coveted by several teams, as the Mariners thought so highly of him that they did not feel they were offered enough by contending teams looking to fortify their rotations.

Now surprisingly, Vargas has been at his best here at Safeco this year, where he may be 5-4 but owns a 2.62 ERA and a fantastic 0.98 WHIP over 92.2 home innings. Because of his lack of run support, the ‘under’ is now an amazing 11-2 in those home starts with those games averaging an unbelievably low 5.47 runs per game combined!

Look for that pattern of low scoring contests to continue for at least one more game in Safeco Field on Sunday.
