The Padres have caught fire and they have been a thorn in the Diamondbacks sides all year long. After making it seven straight wins over the Snakes last night, take Casey Kelly and San Diego as a dog vs. Wade Miley Saturday.
Expect a mild upset on Saturday night when Wade Miley and the Arizona Diamondbacks (68-71 overall, 35-37 away) take on Casey Kelly and the San Diego Padres (65-74 overall, 34-33 home) in the second game of a weekend three-game series from Petco Park in San Diego, CA at 8:35 ET.
The posted money line at Pinnacle Sports has San Diego as small underdog for this contest at current odds of +112.
The Diamondbacks were entertaining playoff thoughts not too long ago, but the defending National League West Champions have now basically fallen out of the race as they are 10½ games behind the San Francisco Giants in the division and 6½ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the final wild card spot. And the Padres are partly to blame!
You see, the D-Backs were feeling good about themselves whenArizona took two out of three from the division leading Giantsearlier this week, but the Padres then took the series opener 6-5 here last night. That amazingly marked the seventh straight time that the Padres have defeated the Snakes this season, and Arizona is now 4-9 vs. San Diego, as opposed to a commendable 23-16 combined vs. the top two teams in the division, the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Padres have actually caught fire lately, going 13-4 in their last 17 games overall and 17-5 in their last 22 games here at Petco. They are still in fourth place in the division, but the Pads have now pulled to within just three games of third place Arizona, and remember that San Diego was a consensus pick to finish last before this year started.
Young Casey Kelly gets the start on Saturday, and Kelly was excellent in his first start after getting recalled from AAA Tucson, pitching six shutout innings while allowing only three hits vs. a good Atlanta Braves’ team that currently tops the wild card standings. Granted he did not pitch well in his last start on the road vs. the Colorado Rockies, but Kelly should appreciate returning to sea level and to the most pitcher-friendly park in the National League tonight.
It also helps that Kelly is facing an Arizona lineup that is batting .236 vs. right-handed pitchers over the last 10 games while averaging 3.54 runs per nine innings against them.
Now we fully get that Miley has been one of the best rookie pitchers in baseball this year at 14-9 with a terrific 2.90 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, and he recorded his third straight Quality Start last Sunday vs. the Dodgers. However, he was not as sharp as usual in that outing as Miley surrendered three earned runs on nine hits plus two walks in 6.2 innings while toiling through 102 pitches.
More importantly, Miley has had a tough time in his three starts vs. these pesky Padres, posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with seven walks against only eight strikeouts in 18.1 innings. His last start against them came here in Petco on June 1st, when he took the loss while permitting four runs in 7.1 innings.
Moreover, the southpaw is facing a San Diego lineup that is uncharacteristically batting a robust .325 vs. left-handed pitchers over the last 10 games while averaging a hearty 6.18 runs per nine innings against them.
With all this in mind, look for San Diego’s uncanny dominance of Arizona to continue while in the small underdog role on Saturday.
