MLB Pick: Giants, Rockies ‘under’ 10½

Ryan Vogelsong is having another fine season and he has never lost to Colorado while the Rockies' Alex White has allowed three runs or less in each of his last eight starts and is backed by a hot bullpen. Go ‘under’ in Colorado Monday.

Expect a much lower scoring game than the posted double-digit total would lead you to believe Monday night when Ryan Vogelsong and the San Francisco Giants (79-61 overall, 39-30 away) take on Alex White and the Colorado Rockies (56-83 overall, 30-41 home) in the opening game of a three-game series from Coors Field in Denver, CO at 8:40 ET.

The posted total at 5 Dimes is 10½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.

Ryan VogelsongThe Giants appear to be on their way to their second National League West title in three years as they have opened up a 5½ game lead on the second place Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies, meanwhile, are destined for a last place finish in the division, as they trail the Giants by 22½ games and the fourth place San Diego Padres by nine games in what has been a very disappointing season.

The Giants took matters into their own hands as San Francisco won two out of three games vs. the Dodgers this weekend to open up a bit of a cushion in the division. Remember that the last time the Giants won the West, they went on to win the 2010 World Series, so they are now hoping lightning strikes twice.

Speaking of lightning striking twice, that is exactly what is happening with Vogelsong for the second straight year. Remember that Vogelsong had been a mediocre journeyman before last season, even pitching overseas while being out of the Major Leagues from 2008 to 2010. He returned to the major last year with the Giants at the age of 33 and out of nowhere went 13-7 with a sparkling 2.71 ERA and made the All-Star team.

Most thought Vogelsong was just a flash in the pan that had a career year, but instead he is having another fine season this year at 12-7 with a 3.29 ERA. Granted he was roughed up for six runs and nine hits in only 3.1 innings by the Arizona Diamondbacks last time out, but thankfully outings like that have been few and far between, as Vogelsong has 20 Quality Starts out of 26 total starts this season.

Moreover, Vogelsong has made six starts vs. the Rockies since returning to the big leagues last season and he is 5-0 with one no-decision in those games with a 2.22 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP while holding Colorado batters to just a .180 batting average.

The Rockies return home after going 1-6 on an Eastern road trip while not hitting a lick, scoring two runs or less in five of the seven games including getting shut out in back-to-back contests in Atlanta. The Rockies are on a 16-5 ‘under’ run as they have actually gotten decent pitching lately to go with that lack of hitting, particular from the bullpen, which has been heavily used with starters limited to 75 pitches due to using a four-man rotation.

Monday’s starter White has taken full advantage of his shortened outings, allowing three runs or less in eight straight starts with the ‘under’ going 7-1 in those outings! More importantly, the bullpen has actually gotten better with more work, as it has posted a 2.53 ERA over 41 innings in the last 10 games.

All thing considered, this double-digit total seems overinflated for the Coors factor, as have probably many others during Colorado’s 16-5 ‘under’ run, so look for another ‘under’ on Monday.
