MLB Pick: Cardinals, Padres go ‘over’

Don’t look now but the Padres have been scoring a ton of runs lately and they boast the National League leader in RBI! With Adam Wainwright and Edinson Volquez each off their game lately, go ‘over’ the low total Tuesday.

Look for a much higher scoring game than the low total suggests Tuesday night when Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals (75-66 overall, 32-37 away) pay a visit to Edinson Volquez and the suddenly potent San Diego Padres (67-75 overall, 36-34 home) in the second game of a three-game series from Petco Park in San Diego, CA at 10:05 ET.

The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 7 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘over’ set at a positive +105.

Carlos BeltranThe Cardinals currently hold the second and last wild card spot on the National League by one game over the Los Angeles Dodgers and by 2½ games over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis also leads the National League in batting at .274 and in runs scored at 4.77 per game. However, the story lately has been the resurgence of the normally putrid San Diego offense.

The Padres were the consensus pick to finish last in the National League West prior to this season, but they have exceeded expectation just by being only eight games below .500 at this last stage of the year, and it is San Diego that has been an offensive juggernaut lately, batting .287 over thee last 10 games while averaging 5.84 runs per game.

The Padres have been even better than that over the last five games, averaging 7.29 runs while scoring at least four runs in every game, culminating with an 11-3 in the series opener here last night. Furthermore, straight from Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the Padres, who play in the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the National League, now have that league’s leader in RBI in Chase Headley with 102!

San Diego sends Volquez to the mound tonight, and he has tailed off noticeably after a very good start this year. Volquez has just two Quality Starts in his last seven total starts after surrendering five earned runs on nine hits plus three walks in only 4.2 innings vs. the Colorado Rockies in his last start. He now has a losing record of 9-10 and he has seen his ERA and WHIP rise to 4.27 and 1.43 respectively.

Volquez received credit for a Quality Start in his only outing vs. the Cardinals this season, but he met the bare minimum requirement by allowing three earned runs in six innings and he was truly not very sharp, allowing five hits and four walks with only one strikeout while laboring through 108 pitches.

As for Wainwright, he missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery, and as you might expect, he was off to a slow start this year while building up his arm strength. It looked to be worth the wait however, as he then looked like vintage Wainwright for a prolonged period.  However, he may now be hitting a dreaded “dead arm” stage.

Ever since Wainwright had a fine outing vs. the Cincinnati Reds three starts back, he has been hit hard in his last two outings, first getting lit up for six earned runs on nine hits while lasting just 2.2 innings vs. the Washington Nationals, and then permitting five earned runs on eight hits in five innings against the New York Mets.

Sure, Wainwright tossed a masterful Complete Game four-hit shutout in his only other start vs. San Diego this season, but that was back in May when he was in peak form and well before the Padres almost inexplicably became one of the hottest hitting teams in baseball.

Therefore, look for this contest to soar over this low total on Tuesday.
