MLB Pick: Brewers, Pirates stay ‘under’ 19.09.2012

Despite still being within sniffing range of a playoff spot, Pirates’ players and fans seem to have given up on this season and Pittsburgh is not hitting a lick. Go ‘under’ when Kyle McPherson takes on Milwaukee’s Marco Estrada Wednesday.

Expect a low scoring affair Wednesday night when Marco Estrada and the Milwaukee Brewers (75-72 overall,29-43 away) take on Kyle McPherson and the Pittsburgh Pirates (74-73 overall, 42-31 home) in the second game of a three-game series from PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA at 7:05 ET.

The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 8 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -115.

Marco EstradaThe Pirates have been a Cinderella story all year long, but don’t look now but it is the Brewers that are making a late-season playoff push! Milwaukee has now passed the Pirates in the standings by one game and the Brewers are just 2½ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the final wild card spot.

The Brewers moved past the Pirates by beating them for the fifth straight time this year 6-0 on Monday, marking Milwaukee 21st win in the last 27 games. The Brewers have been hitting home runs all year, in fact leading the National League with 184 homers to make their team batting average of .259 look better, but they are now getting good pitching also, which has helped key this surge.

Milwaukee has a team ERA of 2.47 over the last 10 games with tonight’s starter Estrada being a big part of that, and the bullpen has also improved by posting a 2.47 ERA with a nice collective 1.16 WHIP during this current span.

Estrada is now 3-6 with all three of his wins coming within his last five starts, but he has actually been pitching well for most of the season as evidenced by his 3.77 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He was simply pitching in hard luck earlier on and the bullpen was blowing leads for him while it was struggling, which helps account for Estrada’s 11 no-decisions in 20 starts.

The truth is he has been sparkling lately while allowing one earned run or less in four of his last five starts, and one of those outings was a no-decision (what else?) vs. these Pirates where he allowed only one run on four hits with an impressive 10 strikeouts in seven innings. In fact, Estrada has had impeccable command all year that belies his record, as he has 125 strikeouts in 119.1 innings against just 25 walks!

Now the Pirates remain only 3½ games out of a playoff spot, but you would not know it by their recent efforts or by their recent home attendance, which was astutely pointed out by the poster milwaukee mike in SBR Forum. The Bucs have gone a dismal 7-19 in their last 26 games overall, and they are batting a putrid .220 as a team over their last 10 contests.

All of this said, we do not really have an interest in playing Milwaukee as a decided road favorite here. However, we do feel that the ‘under’ has value, as if Estrada maintains his fine form and the Pittsburgh offense continues to struggle, then the Brewers’ offense may only need to be reasonably contained for this game to stay ‘under’, not much unlike the 6-0 final score last night.

McPherson is making his first Major League start for the Pirates, but he earned this opportunity by pitching very well in his seven relief appearances, allowing a grand total of two runs and 11 baserunners in 11.2 innings, which translates to a 1.54 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, with 11 strikeouts vs. just two walks.

Thus, look for Milwaukee to be held in check well enough for these teams to stay ‘under’ on Wednesday.
