MLB Pick: Reds, Phillies stay ‘under’

It is a battle of aces in Philadelphia when Cole Hamels of the Phillies takes on Johnny Cueto of the Reds. Both pitchers are in raging current form with each having a WHIP below 1.00 in the last three starts, so go ‘under’ Thursday.

Runs should be extremely hard to come by in a battle of aces on Thursday night when Johnny Cueto and the Cincinnati Reds (76-49 overall, 35-27 away) take on Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies (57-67 overall, 27-35 home) as the teams wrap up a four-game series from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA at 7:05 ET.

The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 7 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -110.

Cole HamelsThe Reds now appear to be well on their way to a National League Central Division title as they have opened up a commanding eight-game lead over the second place St. Louis Cardinals with the Pittsburgh Pirates now 8½ games back in third. In fact, Cincinnati has the second best record in all of baseball, just 1½ games worse than the upstart Washington Nationals.

After dropping the series opener, the Reds have taken the last two games of this series by scores of 5-4 and 3-2 respectively. Cincinnati has the reputation on being a great hitting team, but they are actually winning this year because of pitching. The Reds rank third in the National League with a team ERA of 3.43, while their hitting has actually been rather disappointing as they are batting .256 as a team.

Cueto has been the undisputed ace of the staff as he a sparkling 16-6 with a National League leading 2.44 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Yes, that is the same Johnny Cueto that was the most notable snub in the All-Star Game. Furthermore, Cueto has 135 strikeouts vs. just 37 walks and perhaps most amazingly he has allowed only nine home runs all year while pitching half of his games in a launching pad.

Cueto is showing no signs of slowing down either as he allowed only two runs on three hits in eight innings vs. the Chicago Cubs in his last start on Saturday and he has a spiffy 1.96 ERA with a microscopic 0.61 WHIP over his last three starts.

The Phillies are in uncharted waters for a five-time defending division champion as they are in fourth place in the National League East and 20 games behind the Nationals. Still, they too have a hot ace on the mound in Hamels this evening.

Hamels is 14-6 with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP, and he has 168 strikeouts in 171.1 innings against 42 walks. Like Cueto, Hamels is also in raging current form as he has a 1.05 ERA and a miniscule 0.86 WHIP in his last three starts, and Hamels has six Quality Starts in his last seven outings.

To top things off, Hamels is 7-0 in nine career starts vs. the Reds with a 1.44 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while holding Cincinnati batters to a .164 batting average!

With each ace on top of his game, go ‘under’ in the City of Brotherly Love on Thursday.
