We get a rare chance to go against one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season with a small underdog on Tuesday when the Sabremetrically challenged Earvin Santana and the Los Angeles Angels (62-60 overall, 29-31 away) take on Aaron Cook and the Boston Red Sox (59-63 overall, 29-34 home) as the teams begin a three-game series from Fenway Park in Boston, MA at 7:10 ET.
The posted money line at Pinnacle Sports has Boston as a tiny underdog for this contest at current odds of +101.
Both of these teams were picked to compete for their division titles this season, but both have been major disappointments. The Red Sox have had some internal strife all season with the players reportedly not getting along with Manager Bobby Valentine and their supposed front-line starting pitchers are struggling, and they now find themselves in fourth place, 13 games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East.
The Angels made a major push after a slow start this year, but they fell back badly while getting swept at home in a four-game series by the Tampa Bay Rays this past weekend, leaving Los Angeles in third place and 9½ games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
Part of the problem for the Halos is that Santana has been a major disappointment this year, going 6-10 with a 5.59 ERA. Yes, Santana is coming off of a rare very good start where he allowed only one run and four hits in seven innings, but that was against the struggling Cleveland Indians. He is now facing a Red Sox team that can still hit, ranking sixth in the American League in batting and third in runs scored.
But to truly get an idea how bad a year Santana is having, consider that he has the worst FIP in all of baseball at 5.68, as he has only 91 strikeouts in 135.1 innings with 48 walks, and he has allowed an alarming 28 home runs allowed while pitching half his games in a pitcher’s ballpark.
The Red Sox have been trying to get back in the East race, but they missed an opportunity to close the gap by losing two out of three to the Yankees in the Bronx this weekend. They now look to turn things around at home with Cook on the mound.
Now Cook does not have eye-popping numbers for Boston as he is 3-6 with a 4.58 ERA. However, he does have a good 1.21 WHIP and Cook has actually allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his last nine starts. Cook has always pitched to contact and this year is no exception, as he has only seven strikeouts and 10 walks in 57 innings.
He gets away with that though by owning one of the best sinkers in the game, and he has an out-of-this-world groundball-to-flyball ratio this season of 4.03! Look for Cook to hand the Halos their fifth straight loss as a small dog on Tuesday.
