MLB Pick: Marlins, Nationals go ‘under’

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, Brad Hand of the Marlins is making his first Major League start of 2012 and John Lannan of the Nats is making his second. Expect both offenses to struggle and go ‘under’ in Game 1.
Expect a low scoring battle between two starting pitchers that have been lightly worked at the Major League level this year when Brad Hand and the Miami Marlins (48-57 overall, 21-30 away) take on John Lannan and the Washington Nationals (62-42 overall, 29-21 home) in Game 1 of a twilight doubleheader as the teams open up a four-game weekend series from Nationals Park in Washington, DC at 4:05 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 8½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.
The Nationals shut out the Phillies 3-0 last night as Ross Detwiler got the best of Cole Hamels, enabling the Nationals to hold on to their 2½-game lead over the second place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Marlins, meanwhile, lost to those Braves for the third time in that four-game series 6-1 as Nathan Eovaldi bombed in his second start as a Marlin.
While Hand is making his first start of the year at the big league level in Game 1 this evening, he is not without Major League experience as he made 12 starts for the Marlins last season. Granted he was just 1-8 with a 4.20 ERA, but he actually allowed three earned runs or less in 11 of those 12 starts so he probably deserved a better fate.
Hand performed admirably at the AAA level this year, posting a 3.66 ERA while allowing 113 hits and striking out 116 batters in 128 innings, prompting his call-up. He is a highly regarded 22-year-old that was drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft, although chances are good that he will only be up for this one start at the current time and will probably be called back up again at a later date, definitely in September if not before then.
Hand pitched extremely well vs. the Atlanta Braves in his Major League debut last year when he allowed only one hit in six innings, although that hit was a solo home run in a tough 1-0 loss. He now gets a chance to make another immediate impression as he faced the Nationals twice last year, allowing just one and three earned runs respectively.
Fellow southpaw Lannan has had more Major League experience, all with the Nationals, and he even has a good 3.99 ERA in 129 career starts. He made 33 starts for the Nationals last season and although he went 10-13, he did post a 3.70 ERA.
The first start Lannan made for the Nationals this year was in this exact same circumstance, ashe was recalled to pitch in one game of a doubleheader vs. the Braves, and he did well that day allowing two runs on only five hits in seven innings of a 5-2 win here at home.
Lannan has allowed three runs or less in four of his last five starts vs. the Marlins and he allowed only four runs in the other outing, and he is now facing a Miami lineup that is batting only .231 vs. left-handed pitchers over the entire season and an even worse .214 against them over the last 10 games.
Thus, look for both pitchers to make the most of this opportunity before probably being sent back at the conclusion of this doubleheader, so take the ‘under’ in Game 1 at Washington on Friday.
