MLB Pick: Marlins, Diamondbacks ‘under’ 9½ (-125) ---
The Marlins have scored the second fewest runs in the Major Leagues and Arizona starter Joe Saunders tossed a three-hit shutout against them last time out. With Mark Buehrle coming off a fine outing, go ‘under’ Monday.
Look for a single-digit total run output Monday night when Mark Buehrle and the Miami Marlins (55-67 overall, 26-36 away) take on Joe Saunders and the Arizona Diamondback (62-59 overall, 31-26 home) as the teams kick off a four-game series from Chase Field in Phoenix, A at 9:40 ET.
The posted total at Bodog is 9½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -125.
The Diamondbacks are still hanging in the National League West race, as they are in third place but only 4½ games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers, who now lead the second place San Francisco Giants by one-half game.
Although they are the defending division champions, very few experts picked the Diamondbacks to repeat as NL West champs this year. However, they refuse to go away as they have now won four straight games, and they are now looking to match their season high with a fifth straight win this evening.
Of course, they had the good fortune of playing worst team in baseball this past weekend in the Houston Astros, and they did what they had to by sweeping the three-game set on the road. They now get a chance to take advantage of another struggling offense, as the Marlins have scored the second fewest runs in the Major Leagues while averaging 3.71 runs per game, ahead of only the Chicago Cubs and actually slightly worse than the Astros!
That bodes well for Saunders tonight, who had allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts before getting reached for five earned runs in six innings last time out by a St. Louis Cardinals team that leads the National League in both batting and in runs scored.
Saunders is not facing such a formidable foe this time, and that was apparent the first time he faced the Marlins this year when he tossed a Complete Game three-hit shutout. Saunders has been pitching in a bit of bad luck this year as he is 6-9 despite a decent 3.70 ERA, but that has made him a very good ‘under’ pitcher as it is 13-7, 65.0 percent in all of his starts.
The Marlins just split a four-game series with the last place Colorado Rockies, leaving the Fish in last place themselves in the National League East, 20½ games behind the first place Washington Nationals and 1½ games behind the fourth place Philadelphia Phillies, who had occupied the East basement for much of the season.
Like Saunders, Buehrle also probably deserves a better record than he has, as he is 10-11 but with a 3.74 ERA and a good 1.21 WHIP. Buehrle did pitch well while earning his 10th win vs. the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing just two runs and five hits in seven innings. That was a rather historic win for Buehrle as he has now won at least 10 games in 12 consecutive seasons.
The southpaw Buehrle may be catching Arizona at the right time too, as the Snakes are batting an anemic .163 vs. left-handed pitchers over the last 10 games, making them quite fortunate to be winning games vs. weak competition.
With that in mind, look for both pitchers to do enough to go ‘under’ in the desert tonight.
