Ben Sheets of the Braves has been brilliant in his three starts since returning to the Major Leagues while Wade LeBlanc of the Marlins is making his first start this year after great work out of the pen. Go ‘under’ Wednesday.
Do not look for too much scoring on Wednesday night when Wade LeBlanc and the Miami Marlins (47-56 overall, 20-29 away) take on the resurgent Ben Sheets and the Atlanta Braves (59-44 overall, 29-24 home) as the teams play the third game of a four-game series from Turner Field in Atlanta, GA at 7:10 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 7½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.
These two teams were picked by many to compete for the National League East title before the season, but only the Braves have lived up to their end of the bargain as the Marlins were definite sellers at around the trading deadline in what has become a lost season for them.
The Braves are on fire right now as they have won seven straight games after a 7-1 win here last night, leaving Atlanta 2½ games behind the upstart Washington Nationals, who are proving to be tough to pass with their great young pitching. Still, the Braves are heating up at the perfect time with help of some great pitching of their own, as Atlanta has allowed two runs or less in seven of its last eight games and only three runs in the other contest!
Atlanta has made some shrewd moves such as sending the ineffective Jair Jurrjens to the bullpen, but perhaps the Braves’ best move of all was signing Sheets to a minor league contract on July 1st. Sheets was the first round draft pick by the Brewers way back in 1999, and he had so mine Major League season before it was believed that his career was over after a slew of injuries.
The Braves have given him another chance and are they glad they did! Sheets has allowed a grand total of one run in 18 innings over three starts since being recalled by Atlanta with 15 strikeouts, suggesting that he is still tough to hit at the age of 34. He has looked like the Sheets of old so far after not pitching in the majors since 2010, when a stint with the Oakland Athletics was cut short due to elbow surgery.
He can now take advantage of a young Miami lineup that traded away Hanley Ramirez and is still without Giancarlo Stanton as he remains on the Disabled List.
The Marlins scored some runs vs. the San Diego Padres this past weekend, but this is still a lineup that has scored more than three runs just twice in the last 13 games, and the way Sheets has looked, we do not like the chances of Miami suddenly having an offensive outburst tonight. However, we do feel that LeBlanc can keep this contest low scoring.
LeBlanc has experience as a starting pitcher from his days with the San Diego Padres, and he is now making his first start as a Marlin in place of a struggling Carlos Zambrano, who has been sent to the bullpen. LeBlance earned this opportunity by pitching well in relief this season, posting a 1.15 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 11 appearances while holding the opposition to a .208 batting average.
LeBlanc has one career start vs. the Braves in 2010 where he posted a Quality Start, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, while Sheets has not faced the Marlins since 2007. Thus, both offenses are relatively unfamiliar with the opposing pitchers tonight, which should also contribute to each hurler’s success and help these teams stay ‘under’ in Atlanta Wednesday.
