The Mariners have now beaten the Twins seven straight times this season and Seattle has the steady Jason Vargas on the mound tonight. With the league catching up to Samuel Deduno, take the Mariners again on Wednesday.
Look for an unlikely domination by one team over the other to continue on Wednesday night when Jason Vargas and the Seattle Mariners (63-67 overall, 30-37 away) take on Samuel Deduno and the Minnesota Twins (52-77 overall, 24-39 home) in the third game of a four-game series from Target Field in Minneapolis, MN at 8:10 ET.
The posted money line at Bodog has this contest pretty close to even, with the current odds on Seattle set at -105.
The Mariners are actually playing some pretty good baseball right now as they are 12-4 in their last 16 games to move to just four games under .500, and they are even “only” nine games out of a wild card spot, although nobody expects this team to go on an insane run like the St. Louis Cardinals did last season.
Seattle has also been beating up on some weak teams as the Mariners swept the Cleveland Indians and these Twins while winning the last eight games of their last home stand, and their uncanny success over Minnesota has continued with two more wins to begin this series in the Twin Cities. That leaves Seattle with seven straight wins over the Twins this year since losing the first meeting of 2012 by just a 3-2 score.
We like the Mariners’ chances of making it eight straight wins over Minnesota tonight with the steady Vargas on the bump. While Felix Hernandez is the undisputed ace of this team and one of the very best pitchers in all of baseball, Vargas is undoubtedly Seattle’s number two starter at 13-8 with a 3.75 ERA and a very good 1.16 WHIP.
Sure, Vargas is coming off of a tough outing vs. the White Sox where he allowed six runs in four innings, but that snapped an impressive streak where he had allowed three runs or less in 10 straight starts including allowing two runs or less in eight of those outings! The southpaw gets a chance to recapture that form vs. a Minnesota lineup that is batting a woeful .197 vs. left-handed pitchers in the last 10 games while averaging an anorexic 1.49 runs per game against them.
The Twins have basically mailed things in for this year as they own the worst record in the American League and they have lost their fight by going 5-17 in their last 22 games overall. They have gone to a youth movement that included recalling tonight’s starter Deduno from the minors on July 1st.
Deduno actually pitched quite well in his first handful of starts and he is still 4-2 at the Major League level, albeit with a 4.24 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. Those key numbers have been climbing steadily lately though as the book on Deduno gets spread around the league, and he has had awful command with an atrocious 37 walks against only 30 strikeouts in 51 big league innings.
He was lit up by the Texas Rangers in his last start on Friday for seven earned runs on 11 hits plus a walk while laboring through 85 pitches in only five innings. Yes, Deduno allowed only two runs on five hits in six innings vs. the Mariners in Seattle two starts ago, but he also issued six walks. Besides, Seattle can now make the necessary adjustments having now faced him once.
These are definitely two teams heading in opposite directions right now, and we see nothing changing on Wednesday night, especially at this cheap price. Look for Vargas and the Mainers to beat reeling Minnesota for the eighth consecutive time.
