Chris Capuano of the Dodgers had done a nice job of maintaining his good form before suffering a hiccup last time out, while Tyler Chatwood of Colorado should be able to handle a struggling Dodger lineup. Go ‘under’ Tuesday.
Look for a relatively low scoring game in the altitude Tuesday as two National League West rivals get together when Chris Capuano and the Los Angeles Dodgers (69-60 overall, 34-31 away) take on Tyler Chatwood and the Colorado Rockies (52-75 overall, 27-39 home) in the second game of a three-game series from Coors Field in Denver, CO at 8:40 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 10½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at a nice positive +112.
The Dodgers are currently in second place in the division 2½ games behind the San Francisco Giants, but Los Angeles is trending in the wrong direction by going 2-5 in the last seven games at the most critical time of the season, including suffering a three-game home sweep at the hands of those Giants last week. The Dodgers are also now 2½ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second and last National League wild card spot.
The Dodgers have not done themselves any favors by losing back-to-back games to last place teams either, first losing the finale of a home stand vs. the Miami Marlins on Sunday and then losing the series opener 10-0 here last night while managing just four hits. Josh Beckett actually did not pitch badly in his Dodger debut Monday and it was only a 3-0 game until the Rockies scored seven runs in their final at-bat in the eighth inning.
LA turns to Capuano today, who is 11-9 with a solid 3.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP overall with a nice ratio of 145 strikeouts against 46 walks. Capuano had done a surprisingly good job of maintaining his form while others were expecting regression until he finally did hit a blip in his last start.
Capuano allowed six runs on six hits in 5.2 innings during the big series against the Giants afterhe had allowed a total of only five runs and 16 hits in 22.1 innings with 24 strikeouts vs. five walks in his previous three starts. We do expect Capuano to bounce back well tonight though as he has three Quality Starts in his last four outings vs. the Rockies.
One of those good outings came here at Coors Field last season while he was a member of the New York Mets, when he held the Rockies to two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings.. The question tonight though becomes whether or not he will get enough run support.
The Dodgers have had several offensive funks this year and they have now amassed a total of two runs in two games. Colorado’s Chatwood has a decent 3.75 ERA against them accumulated during interleague play while he was with the Los Angeles Angels, and the Dodgers were downright pathetic vs. some rather pedestrian Colorado hurlers last night.
Chatwood has made five starts for the Rockies and he has mostly sparkled except for one bad outing vs. the Miami Marlins, allowing one earned run or less on four of those five starts. One caveat is that he tossed just three scoreless innings vs. the Mets last time out when he was lifted after 65 pitches, as Manager Jim Tracy is limiting his starters to 75 pitches while employing a four-man rotation.
However, Chatwood is pitching with the conventional four days rest here tonight, just like Jeff Francis last night when he threw five scoreless innings while allowing three of the Dodgers’ four hits.
Finally, the Colorado bullpen seems to be relishing the heavier workload lately while posting a very nice 1.67 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 41 innings over the last 10 games. Thus, go ‘under’ the fat double-digit total in Denver on Tuesday.
