The Pirates are hanging in their National League Central Division race because of pitching, such as in their 4-0 win over Arizona last night, and Jeff Karstens in good form. With Patrick Corbin also pitching well, go ‘under’ Tuesday.
Look for another low scoring game such as last night on Tuesday when Patrick Corbin and the Arizona Diamondbacks (55-54 overall, 25-30 away) take on Jeff Karstens and the Pittsburgh Pirates (62-46 overall, 34-16 home) as the teams play the second game of a four-game series from PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA at 7:05 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 7½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.
The surprising Pirates were in danger of falling dangerously behind the first place Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central when they lost the first two games of a crucial three-game series this past weekend before salvaging the final game in the Queen City.
The Pirates then shut out the Diamondback 4-0 in the series opener here last night as both starting pitchers, Erik Bedard of the Pirates and Arizona’s Wade Miley, pitched extremely well before the Bucs tacked on three runs vs. the Diamondbacks’ bullpen in the eighth inning. That win pulled the second place Pirates to within 3½ games of Cincinnati.
That was a typical contest this season for a Pittsburgh team that is getting very good pitching but is lacking in the hitting department despite boasting the Major League’s leading hitter in Andrew McCutchen (.369), as the Pirates now rank fourth in the National League with a 3.56 ERA but only 12th with a .247 batting average. Tuesday’s starter Karstens spent over three months on the Disabled List this season, but he has been a key contributor when taking the mound.
Karstens has made 10 starts this year with three coming before his DL stint and seven coming since his comeback on June 25th, and he is 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.20 WHIP while allowing three runs or less in seven of those starts. He is in very good current form as he has allowed one run or less in three of his last five starts, most recently vs. the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday when he allowed one run on only three hits, and Karstens is 4-0 in his last six outings.
It was against these Diamondbacks in April that Karstens made his last start before going on the Disabled list with shoulder inflammation, as he was pulled after allowing two runs in the first inning. He is still has a nice 2.45 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in eight career games vs. the Diamondbacks while limiting Arizona batters to a .213 average.
The Diamondbacks are in a pennant race of their own as they trail the San Francisco Giants by four games in the National League West, but they have stopped hitting, getting shut out twice during their current three-game losing streak after managing just two hits vs. the previously struggling Bedard and the Pittsburgh bullpen last night.
Arizona hopes to stop the bleeding with young Corbin on the hill, and he has had some nice moments in his rookie Major League season this year while splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen. He has made six starts and five relief appearances at the big league level and is 3-4 but with a commendable 3.60 ERA and 1.27 WHIP overall, and he is coming off of a fantastic performance vs. the Dodgers where he allowed two hits in six scoreless innings!
This will be Corbin’s first appearance ever vs. the Pirates, which should make the southpaw doubly tough to hit for a mediocre-at-best lineup outside of McCutchen. That along with Karstens’ fine form should help these teams go ‘under’ on Tuesday.
