MLB Pick: Rangers, Mariners go ‘under’

All-Star Matt Harrison of the Rangers is 11-4 and he has dominated the Mariners over his brief career, while Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma pitched well in his first Major League start. Add a pitcher’s park and go ‘under’ Sunday.

Runs could be at a premium when the first place and last place teams in the American League West get together Sunday when Matt Harrison and the Texas Rangers (53-35 overall, 24-19 away) take on Hisashi Iwakuma and the Seattle Mariners (37-52 overall, 17-26 home) as the teams conclude a weekend three-game series from Safeco Field in Seattle, WA at 4:10 ET.

The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 8 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -120.

Matt HarrisonThe Rangers have a five-game lead over the second place Los Angeles Angels in the West and they lead the Major Leagues in both batting (.279) and runs scored (5.07 per game), but like most teams, their offense has sputtered a bit here in Safeco Field, which is the most pitcher-friendly stadium in the American League with games here averaging just 6.23 runs per game combined this year.

These teams gave split the first two games of this series with the Rangers scoring a total of only three runs. Texas won the series opener 3-2 on Friday before the Mariners may have used up their entire offensive output for a week in a 7-0 shutout victory last night. The Rangers look to get back on track with their All-Star Harrison on the mound tonight.

Harrison is looking to join David Price as the American League’s second 12-game winner after Price accomplished that feat last night. Harrison is 11-4 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.24 WHIP and the southpaw has now gone an impressive 10 consecutive starts without allowing more than three runs, allowing two runs or less in eight of those outings!

Harrison has been a cash cow with the Rangers as a team going 12-5 for +5.10 units in all of his starts, but do not overlook the fact that the ‘under’ is 11-5-1 in those starts. Chances are good that continues today as Harrison has dominated the Mariners’ lineup since entering the league, going 8-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 11 starts against them. Moreover, he is 6-0 with a 1.91 ERA the last six times he faced Seattle.

We see no reason why that dominance cannot continue today as despite last night’s seven-run outburst, the Mariners are still batting a putrid .187 while averaging just 2.44 runs per game over their last 16 contests.

In fact, Seattle ranks second to last in the Major Leagues with a .230 batting average over the entire season, which is a key reason why the Mariners are in last place and 16½ games behind the front-running Rangers. That said, their pitching has done a fine job vs. the potent Texas bats and Iwakuma also has a chance to be effective today.

The right-hander from Japan pitched well in his first Major League start vs. the Baltimore Orioleson July 2nd after 14 relief appearances, allowing three runs on only three hits in five innings with all the runs coming on one swing of the bat by Chris Davis. Iwakuma got the win in that 6-3 triumph, and he should have continued success here vs. another team that is unfamiliar with him.

Besides, for the offensive prowess the Rangers possess, their weakest split has been against right-handers on the road, where they are batting a surprisingly pedestrian .253 against them. Also, as you might expect in this stadium, the ‘under’ is now 10-3 in Seattle’s last 13 home games, and that is with last night’s game sneaking ‘over’ by ½ a run.

With this posted total slightly higher, go ‘under’ in the Emerald City on Sunday.
Rangers, Mariners ‘under’ 8 (-120)  +++
