Southpaws Clayton Richard of the Padres and Wandy Rodriguez of the Astros each have an ERA in the 3.00s and both teams have been abysmal vs. left handers. Add in pitcher friendly Petco Park and go ‘under’ Wednesday afternoon.
Do not expect too much scoring in a battle of southpaws on Wednesday afternoon when Wandy Rodriguez and the Houston Astros (34-57 overall, 10-36 away) take on Clayton Richard and the San Diego Padres (37-55 overall, 18-28 home) as the teams play the third game of a four-game series from Petco Park in San Diego, CA at 3:35 ET.
The posted total at 5 Dimes is 6½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at a positive +105.
Now a total of 6½ may seem low at first glance, but keep in mind that Petco Park is the most pitcher-friendly park in the National League with games here averaging 6.91 runs combined this year and that these are two of the worst teams in baseball that have struggled mightily vs. competent left-handed pitchers.
The Padres are in fourth place in the National League West just one game ahead of the last place Colorado Rockies, although to be fair, San Diego has won three of its last four games after these teams split the first two games of this series, and the Padres actually scored eight runs in an 8-2 win last night to even the series.
Last night’s outburst came vs. right-hander Jordan Lyles though, and the Padres have been pathetic vs. left-handers this year such as when they were shut down by J.A. Happ in a 2-0 loss in the opening game on Monday. San Diego is batting a poor .225 vs. southpaws this season while averaging an anemic 3.09 runs per nine innings against them, which should make life easier for Houston’s Rodriguez.
The Padres have a competent left-hander of their own here in Richard, whose 6-10 record is very deceptive considering his 3.83 ERA and good 1.18 WHIP. Richard is also on a nice roll right now as he has six Quality Starts in his last seven outings, and they were not cheap Quality Starts either as he allowed two runs or less in five of those starts.
Richard was also outstanding in a brutal 1-0 loss the only time he faced the Astros in Houston this season, allowing one run on only two hits with no walks in seven innings. Unfortunately, he received literally zero support from his offense and he could very well suffer that same fate today.
Then again, the Astros have been even worse than San Diego vs. lefties, hitting a pathetic .201 against them overall and a dreadful .182 against them on the road! Houston has scored a grand total of nine runs in its first five games after the All-Star break, scoring just five runs while getting swept in three games by the San Francisco Giants before this series. Thus, Rodriguez does not figure to get many runs to work with either.
To his credit, Wandy has managed to go 7-7 while pitching for a team that is 23 games under .500 and in last place in the National League Central. He has a good 3.51 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 79 strikeouts against only 27 walks, and most importantly he has improved his pitching on the road after having the most severe home/away splits you will ever see earlier in his career, as he has a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP away from home this season.
Granted Rodriguez allowed five runs in 6.2 innings the only time he faced the Padres this season, but that was at home in Minute Maid Park and Rodriguez pitched well in his last start at spacious Petco last year, allowing only one run on seven hits in seven innings.
The ‘under’ is 6-2 in the last eight games in San Diego even with last night’s game going ‘over’, and with two good enough lefties going today vs. two offenses that have been absolutely brutal vs. southpaws, look for another Petco ‘under’ on Wednesday.
