Expect a lower scoring game than the double-digit posted total would indicate on Monday night when Christian Friedrich and the Colorado Rockies (23-30 overall, 8-15 away) take on Joe Saunders and the Arizona Diamondbacks (25-29 overall, 10-15 home) as the teams open up a three-game series from Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ at 9:40 ET.
The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 10 for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under set at -115.
Both of these National League West rivals enter this contest in good form, as the Rockies just completed a 6-1 home stand and the Diamondbacks have won three of their last four games. Still, that only leaves Arizona in third place in the West, eight games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Colorado is in fourth place at 9½ games out.
The D-Backs have had their problems at home this year going just 10-15, but they did take two out of three games from the Milwaukee Brewers in their last home series before going on a six-game road trip where they went 3-3, although as mentioned the three wins came within the last four games including a 6-0 shutout of the Padres at San Diego yesterday behind Trevor Cahill.
The Snakes turn to Saunders tonight, who after a couple of rough outings has been sharper lately, allowing three runs or less in two of his last three starts. Saunders posted a Quality Starts vs. the Kansas City Royals three starts back and he then allowed only one run on five hits on 5.2 innings vs. the San Francisco Giants last time out, leaving him at 3-3 with a good 3.61 ERA for the season.
Perhaps most importantly in regards to this game, Saunders has pitched well vs. the Rockies throughout his career, tossing six Quality Starts in seven lifetime starts against them including going a perfect three for three in Quality Starts against Colorado last year. He is facing a Rockies’ offense that has struggled once it leaves the altitude of Denver, as the Rocks are batting only .225 on the road while averaging 3.74 runs per game.
The Rockies swept a four-game series from the Houston Astros and then took two out of three from the first place Dodgers on their home stand, which ended with a 3-2 win yesterday in a Coors Field pitching duel with Alex White besting Nathan Eovaldi. Their youngster Friedrich is making his sixth Major League start tonight after being called up last month.
Friedrich was brilliant in his first two starts, debuting by limiting the Padres to one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings and then allowing only one run on six hits in seven innings with an impressive 10 strikeouts in his second start vs. the Giants. He has not pitched nearly as well over his last three starts though, posting a 9.00 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in 16 innings.
However, he has maintained his control even over those outings, with 15 strikeouts vs. six walks, and he won his last two starts after getting staked to large leads, so his recent ugly stat line could be a direct result of throwing fat strikes while not wanting to walk anyone with a lead. He allowed five runs on 11 hits in six innings vs. the Astros last time out, but he got the win in the 13-5 triumph while striking out six and walking only one.
Interestingly, Friedrich has a 2.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with a fantastic ratio of 23 strikeouts to three walks in 18 innings over his three road starts, and the southpaw is facing an Arizona lineup that is hitting just .236 vs. left-handed pitchers here at home. Thus, he has a chance to revert back to the great form he displayed his first two times out tonight, especially facing Arizona for the first time ever.
