MLB Pick: Brewers, Dodgers go ‘over’

Zack Greinke of the Brewers has some of the most severe home vs. away splits in all of baseball while Chad Billingsley of the Dodgers is allowing two baserunners per inning his last three starts. Go ‘over’ in Tinseltown Thursday.

Look for a higher scoring game than the low posted total suggests on Thursday night when Zack Greinke and the Milwaukee Brewers (22-28 overall, 11-15 away) take on Chad Billingsley and the Los Angeles Dodgers (32-18 overall, 21-8 home) as the teams wrap up a long four-game series from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA at 10:10 ET.

The posted total at Bookmaker Sportsbook is 6½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘over’ set at -120.

The Brewers lost Prince Fielder to free agency during the off season and the defending National League Central Champions are feeling the pinch, as they have slipped to six games under.500 while tied for fourth place in the division with the Houston Astros this year, six games behind the division leading Cincinnati Reds

Ryan BraunHowever, Milwaukee was nine games under .500 and just 8-15 on the road when this series began, and yet the Brew Crew is going for the improbable four-game road sweep this evening vs. the .team with the best record in the National League and with their ace Greinke on the hill. Normally that would be cause for enthusiasm, but Greinke’s extreme home/away splits paint a totally different picture.

Greinke has always pitched better at home than on the road and his first year in the National League last year was no exception, as he was a perfect 11-0 at home and 5-6 on the road. This year however, he has taken things to an almost unheard of level.

Greinke’s overall numbers put him right there with the best pitchers in baseball this season, as his 62 strikeouts vs. 15 walks and two home runs allowed in 59.0 innings currently have him ranked second in the Majors Leagues in FIP behind only Gio Gonzalez of the Washington Nationals.

However, while he is still undefeated at home in a Brewer uniform as he is 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA, 0.84 EHIP and a 1.85 batting average against at Miller Park this year, he is just 2-2 with a dreadful 7.03 ERA and 1.93 WHIP on the road where opponents are hitting an obscene .369 off of him!

His last start came on the road vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, so naturally Greinke was roughed up for seven earned runs on 10 hits plus three walks in only 2.1 innings. Yes, he has allowed a total of three runs and nine hits in 14 innings in two starts vs. the Dodgers as a member of the Brewers, but both of those starts came at home and this will be his first ever career start here in Tinseltown.

The Dodgers still lead the National League West by 5½ games over the second place San Francisco Giants, but that is mainly because of the weakness of the division as the 27-24 Giants are the only other team over .500. Los Angeles is skidding right now gong 2-5 in the last seven games and Billingsley’s performance has mirrored that of the team, as he too is slumping after a hot start.

Billingsley has slipped to 2-3 with a 3.88 ERA and a high 1.44 WHIP overall, mainly because he has constantly been pitching with men on base over his last three starts, during which he has a 5.40 ERA and a gross 2.00 WHIP over 15 innings. He has struggled with his command for much of the season, averaging a high 3.72 walks per nine innings, and his uninspiring WAR of 0.6 is the worst among the Dodger starters.

All things considered, this posted total seems way too low to us, as it seems based more in Greinke’s overall numbers than on his rotten road form. Therefore, go ‘over’ the low number at Chavez Ravine on Thursday.
 Brewers, Dodgers ‘over’ 6½ (-120) ---
