Tuesday's best NHL bets

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-165, 5)

The one constant for the Detroit Red Wings this season has been a decisive edge on their home ice. That quickly went out the window in their playoff home opener, leaving Detroit in a perilous situation Tuesday night as it prepares to host the Nashville Predators in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Nashville posted a 3-2 win in Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena – its second straight victory in Detroit counting the regular season – to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Even though Detroit’s penalty-killing unit has done a superb job of keeping Nashville’s top-ranked power play in check, the number of infractions whistled against the Red Wings is grating on the players.

Detroit was the second-least penalized team (to Nashville) in the regular season but ranks third in the playoffs with 19 penalties.

"You don't want to be wasting your energy killing penalties the whole game,” Drew Miller told reporters.

The Red Wings also need some of their top scorers to step up. Jiri Hudler, who had 25 goals during the regular season, doesn’t have a point in the series, while 23-goal scorer Valtteri Filppula has only one assist.

Pick: Under +++

Phoenix Coyotes at Chicago Blackhawks (-150, 5.5)

Mike Smith was the one player touted as indispensable entering the Western Conference quarterfinal between the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes.

 So, the news that Smith was among three Phoenix players that didn’t practice Monday raised more than a few questions as the series shifted to Chicago for Tuesday’s Game 3 tied at one game apiece. Smith was flattened by a shoulder to the head during the Blackhawks’ overtime win Saturday, but remained in the game and claimed he was 100 percent.

Smith reacted like he was beheaded when he was hit by Chicago’s Andrew Shaw during the second period, but he played extremely well the rest of the way.

Martin Hanzal, who scored in overtime of Game 1, and left wing Lauri Korpikoski also missed Monday’s practice after sustaining injuries in Game 2.

Phoenix coach Dave Tippett declined to discuss the health of any of the three players, but said of Smith: “He’s fine.”

That's good news for under bettors.
